1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (CF3CH2F, HFC-134a) is widely used in refrigeration, foaming, aerosol and other industries as a pollution-free substitute for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This paper describes the synthetic route of HFC-134a. Through the comparison of the synthetic routes of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), the synthetic route of HFC-134a was selected by using TCE as raw material and through the two-step gas-phase fluorination of the intermediate 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane (HCFC-133a).
