千手千眼之形象、姿态、持物、印象等变化很多，主要有三面、十一面等等，手臂则有二、四、八、二十五手和四十手诸种，更有密匝如数作成千只手的，如大足石窟中宋代石雕、开封大相国寺、莫高窟元代壁画，观音千手皆现。
敦煌千手经变于盛唐，出现有单、三、十一面及五十一面观音等，日本僧人辑成《秘藏记》中载有二十七面像，而京都法性寺有二十七面观音立像，奈良金峰山寺与兵库清澄寺中有二十七面绢画像。
千手像的法器，主要为四十正大手所持執 ，以示息炎、降服、祈愿、成功种种表徽。《千手经》中载:若为富饶种种珍财资具者，当于如意珠手；若为腹中种种病者，当于宝钵手；若为降服一切鬼神者，当于宝剑手；如此等等。
这是一幅以十一面千手千眼观世音菩萨为本尊的新勉唐派风格的唐卡，其表现观世音大慈大悲之心，以千手护持众生，千眼观照人间。该唐卡长76厘米，宽57厘米，质地为棉布矿物胶彩外部浮雕彩绘漆金。主尊为十一面千手千眼观音，也称大悲观音，有时还称为"十一面佛"。其观音前方三面呈慈悲相，代表宝部;左方三面呈嗔怒相，代表金刚部;右方三面亦呈慈悲相，代表莲花部;后方一面呈忿怒相，代表(摩羯)羯磨部;顶部一面为阿弥陀佛，呈寂静相，代表佛部。胸前双手合十，身披璎珞，立于莲花台上。唐卡周围上部中间为阿弥陀佛，左上有阿底峡、莲花生和宗喀巴，右上有达赖喇嘛、法王和弥拉日巴像。下部为绿度母、白度母，中为六臂玛哈嘎啦和其他护法。此幅唐卡菩萨的法相慈祥端庄，神态内摄，其服饰华丽而不失优雅，手臂的配置繁而不乱，整体让人感觉清远而高雅，是一件可作为佛堂主尊的佳作。
唐卡艺术因画工考究、颜料珍贵、色彩亮丽、图像庄严，在东方绘画艺术中独树一帜，具有高度的考古价值和艺术价值，被称为佛教艺术的一朵奇葩，从2006年开始唐卡被列入我国首批非物质文化遗产。
